Wedding Photographer The Famous Blacksmiths Shop Gretna Green Photography
One very special location with an incredible amount of history is the Original Marriage Room in Gretna Green. Located in the Famous Blacksmiths shop, it’s a location where couples used to (and still) elope to get married in a shotgun wedding.
Gretna is full of quirky charm – but it’s a quick step out into the fields of Dumfries and Galloway. Nature is always my preferred backdrop for any photoshoot or wedding, you can’t beat a bit of natural beauty! Couples often find me on Google as they see I’ve photographed weddings in Gretna Green but the photos are of nature. I do know some little pockets of beauty we can use from a number of different locations at Gretna.
Not forgetting the past, Gretna is certainly a location for the history lovers.
Gretna Green is renowned for its romantic history and is famously known as the “marriage capital” of the UK. But at the heart of this enchanting village lies a unique landmark that has captured the imagination of many: the Blacksmiths Shop. This iconic establishment is not just a place of craftsmanship but a symbol of love, rebellion, and history. Join us as we delve into the captivating past of the Blacksmiths Shop in Gretna Green.
Founded in the early 18th century, Gretna Green became a popular destination for eloping couples, particularly after the Marriage Act of 1753 made it more difficult for young couples in England to marry without parental consent. The proximity of Gretna Green to the English border made it the perfect spot for those wishing to escape societal restrictions.
At the heart of this romantic exodus was the Blacksmiths Shop, established in 1712. It is here that the blacksmith, often referred to as the “Old Blacksmith,” would perform wedding ceremonies. The shop originally served as a place for shoeing horses and crafting ironwork, but over time, it became known for uniting couples in matrimony.
The blacksmith had the authority to conduct marriages, and many couples would arrive with the sound of clanging metal in their ears, seeking love and freedom from the constraints of their time. This unique role transformed the blacksmith from a tradesman into a celebrant, making the shop a significant part of Gretna Green’s history.
