Wedding Photography Styles
Styles of photography can vary from photographer to photographer. Everyone has their own way of shooting, but there are two very important styles of wedding photography. Traditional vs documentary. Back before camera phones and digital cameras, posing for photos was the go-to. Every photo carefully thought out and staged, the photographer could be certain they got the shot they needed. Today documentary style photography is much more common.
True documentary style wedding photographers don’t provide any posed photos, and they give a fly on the wall point of view. Capturing each moment naturally is such a beautiful thing! Natural laughter and smiles make my heart sing, these can’t be caught by asking someone to smile. They happen organically.
What style am I? I am very much a documentary style wedding photographer. I don’t like to say I AM a documentary wedding photographer because I am happy provided a few posed photos of the day if the bride and groom wish. I understand how important a few family group photos can be, and I’m happy to do a few staged bride and groom portraits… although I like to keep these as natural as possible! I always ask the bride and groom to stand in nice light, and have them talk and walk together. They can relax together and have a laugh, which provide lovely natural looking photos!
Not having a long list of posed photos frees up the time I have to search what’s going on around me. To photograph the guests laughing together, the lovely little details of the reception venue and to seek out the little moments brides and grooms may otherwise miss.
Before you book your photographer, make sure they shoot the style that you love the most and you won’t be disappointed!
